My love for the humble granny square started at the end of 2025 after I took a beginners crochet class at the “The Wool Haven” with a lovely teacher named Simone.
I had previously tried a crochet class when I was pregnant with my son who is now 13 and my brain just did not compute.. I always left with a sore head from trying to count and keep track with no clue what I was actually trying to count or keep track of..
Fast forward to the present day and something just clicked.. I realised that small accomplishments add up to great things! Like cardigans..
The reason I wanted to take up crochet again was because I bought the most beautiful hot pink fluffy cardigan from a shop called in glasgow, it was really expensive and I left it there the first time I seen it but the next time I went back the lady that owned the shop said she had been pretty quiet and offered me a discount that I just couldn’t refuse.. it was mine! I so badly wanted to recreate this cardigan in all colours that I set about learning how..
On my journey and completley winging it with no pattern i discovered it wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be and garments take a long time for beginners to crochet and use a whole lot of Yarm! But I also discovered that I could make my own patterns, Mistakes were made. And lessons were learned the hard way..
Not one to be put off my goals I continued on my mission, I created all sorts of things (none a replica of the cardigan mind you) but I kept at it picking up lots of little skills along the way, I watched a good few you tube videos and I fell In love with the hexi cardigan as well.. I made a few.. it took hours.. days..weeks sometimes to complete a cardigan but the sense of Accomplishment was really meaningfull to me, my job at this time was quiet and it meant that all the time I spent waiting for work was spent more Wisley and I felt like I was steadily achieving something amd learning skills rather that sitting around doom scrolling
A few months into my journey I found some amazing things in my favorite local charity shop kinder handi one day, knitting needles, a big folder of how to,s and patterns , a huge bag of scrap yarn and a granny square book. my adternnon was sorted.. I set about making a wee heart square I had seen… then as I made it I realised hey this could be a little dog jumper if I kept on going and added some stuff, I knew how to make collars, cuffs and join stuff together by this point and thought a tiny version of a jumper for my chihuahua would be super cute (see picture) then I thought hmmm I could make a few more of these wee squares and make a jacket for my GSP too… (see other picture) then I thought about the von trap family (see family picture) soon I realised that the possibilities of granny squares and crochet was endless! If i could vision it and dream it up i could make it. And a little square here and there can add up to a whole lot of stuff!
There is also alot to be said for completing small projects and getting a little burst of dopamine when you see your completed square, sometimes they are like little puzzles that I have to work out and learn new stitches, (i would say i am now a semi competent patter reader but there is always sonething i have to google or you tube) every day I can learn something new and challenge myself, I get something pretty at the end I can use too! I realised that celebrating the little wins gives you a glow 🙂 scientifically proven by the way.. (more on that in another page)
I never get bored crocheting there is always something to be doing and if your brain isn’t braining there there is also the amazing granny stitch to make blankets! As i write this my current blanket WIP (work in progress) is a huge grass garden blanket I’m going to cover with pretty flowers just to make me smile 😊
I still havnt made the actual cardigan as I write this btw but I will.. one day My aim now is to create amazing things and enjoy the journey, there is something very special in something that has been handmade, someone’s time effort and love has went into each project wether it’s big or small, and no two projects I make are ever the same, ideas and skills grow all the the time, I created this site to share my joy and journey with others, I have big plans one day to write my own patterns and sell some of my creations that I think someone out thee will enjoy
Keep glowing
